Description
Absolutely thrilled that "Last Chance Gas" tied for first place in the Fine Art America contest "ROADSIDE MOTELS EATERIES SALOONS AND GAS STATIONS" 8/29/2020. Many thanks to the contest administrator, S Jamieson, and to everyone who voted for my image. Congratulations to the other winners!!
An art-deco service station stands by the side of a lonely road that curves through a hot, empty desert. Is it deserted? Are they open? Where are the pumps?
As much as I love artwork of birds and sunsets and landscapes and flowers, I really love architectural images. The old expression, "If these walls could talk ... " always, always gets my imagination going and has me thinking about the buildings and all the storeis behind their walls.
As to architectural design preferences, I don't really have any, I love it all ... but I admit art-deco has always held a fascination for me.
The amazing art-deco gas station in this image is actually located on a corner in Bedford, Pennsylvania, USA. Surrounded by completely ordinary buildings it stands out like a diamond in a pile of wood-chips.
I've been known to go way out of my way just to drive by and enjoy the eye candy.
(Shouldn't Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" be playing in the background? Or maybe "Rhapsody in Sand"????) ; ))
A little info about art deco. It's a style of visual arts, architecture and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. Art Deco influenced the design of buildings, furniture, jewellery, fashion, cars, movie theatres, trains, ocean liners, and everyday objects such as radios and even vacuum cleaners. It combined modernist styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.
Art Deco was a combination of many different styles, sometimes contradictory, united by a desire to be modern. From its outset, Art Deco was influenced by the bold geometric forms of Cubism; the bright colors of Fauvism and of the Ballets Russes; the updated craftsmanship of the furniture of the eras of Louis Philippe and Louis XVI; and the exotic styles of China and Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt and Maya art. It featured rare and expensive materials, such as ebony and ivory, and exquisite craftsmanship. The Chrysler Building and other skyscrapers of New York built during the 1920s and 1930s are monuments of the Art Deco style.
Fine art purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... this image will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."

Terrific creation and I'm sure this charming old building would heartily approve its new setting. Love the tones. This was one of my two pod's in the Best of Minimalism group for September 5.
